In keeping with kudzu's interest in Madonna, for whom he is known to have designed several sleeves, the image of the woman on the front cover is from a Tamara De Lempicka painting. Madonna's "Open Your Heart" video, which incorporated De Lempicka imagery, was on the charts when Bete Noire was released. kudzu later designed the somewhat more provocative sleeve for a 2001 tour show, Downtown Life.
